A spaza shop owner named Umar was murdered on 13 July in Bonteheuwel, with CCTV footage revealing a woman allegedly pretending to be a customer before a man shot him and handed over the firearm.

Four suspects were arrested on extortion-related charges and set for court appearances, but councillors expressed disappointment as charges against four individuals were dropped due to insufficient evidence.The female suspect seen taking the gun will face further legal proceedings.

Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie highlighted the need for expanded police powers to combat crime in the area, emphasizing that the suspects were linked to attacks on spaza shops.
