British volunteer Ayrton Redfearn killed while serving in Ukraine’s Donetsk region

Ayrton Redfearn, a 23-year-old British national from Devon, has been confirmed killed in action in Ukraine’s Donetsk region on 9 May.He had travelled to Ukraine in 2025 to join a specialist unit supporting the Ukrainian armed forces amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

According to his family, his mother Natasha was informed of his death after police arrived at her home on the evening of 11 May, describing the moment as the realisation of her worst fears.She explained that she had lived with constant anxiety about receiving such news since her son went to Ukraine.

Mr Redfearn had a background in military-related activities in the UK, having been a Torquay Air Cadet during his youth and later joining the Royal Air Force at the age of 17 before travelling abroad.

His family has paid tribute to him, describing his bravery and strength, while also expressing their grief and gratitude for the support received from friends, acquaintances, and members of the public.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed that it is providing assistance to the family of the deceased British national and remains in contact with Ukrainian authorities.

The FCDO has also reiterated its warning that British nationals fighting in Ukraine face significant risks, including death, capture, or maltreatment, highlighting that several individuals have already been killed or detained in connection with the conflict.The case underscores the continued dangers faced by foreign volunteers participating in frontline operations in Ukraine.
