Waratahs finish disappointing season with loss to Force and Jake Gordon Achilles injury
ACT Brumbies captain Allan Alaalatoa has called for the team to field its strongest possible side as they head into a decisive final-round Super Rugby clash against Moana Pasifika, with finals positioning still up for grabs.
While coach Stephen Larkham is considering resting some players ahead of the finals series, Alaalatoa believes maintaining combinations and building confidence is more important, especially with the team still capable of finishing as high as third on the ladder. The Brumbies currently sit fifth and could face several different playoff scenarios depending on results elsewhere.
A bonus-point win combined with losses by both the Crusaders and Blues could elevate them into third place, though they would also need to overcome a significant points differential gap with the Blues.
Alternatively, fourth place remains possible if the Brumbies secure a bonus-point win and the Crusaders lose to the Hurricanes by more than seven points.
However, if both the Crusaders and Blues win, the Brumbies are likely locked into their current position, setting up a quarter-final against the Chiefs in Hamilton.Alaalatoa emphasised that the squad should focus on controllable factors such as preparation and performance rather than scoreboard calculations.
He highlighted the importance of confidence heading into the finals, while also acknowledging the physical and motivated challenge posed by Moana Pasifika, who are playing their final Super Rugby match following the club’s announcement that this season will be their last in the competition.
Alaalatoa, who recently celebrated his 150th Super Rugby appearance with a try against the Waratahs, also warned of tighter officiating and the need for improved discipline. The Brumbies face Moana Pasifika at Canberra Stadium on Saturday in a match that could significantly shape their finals path.
