Clarence Thomas dissent criticized after Supreme Court rejects Florida interstate lawsuit over driver’s licenses
Violetta Mailyan, a 45-year-old doctor from Glendale, California, has been convicted of orchestrating a $45 million Medicare fraud scheme. The federal jury found her guilty on nine counts of wire fraud and three counts of obstructing a criminal investigation.
Mailyan ran the Healthy Way Medical Center and submitted claims for Botox injections that were medically unnecessary or never provided, including billing for patients who were incarcerated or during dates when the clinic was closed.Medicare records revealed that she received over $24 million in four years, six times more than other top neurologists in the U.S.
Prosecutors stated that Mailyan used the fraud proceeds to fund luxury vacations and purchase high-end collectibles, such as a $3,000 painting of Ludwig I, Crown Prince of Bavaria, and a $12,000 17th-century crossbow.Additional assets subject to forfeiture include a Tesla Model X, a Tesla Cybertruck, multiple bank accounts, and four properties in California.
The case was flagged by the DOJ’s Health Care Fraud Section through data analytics that identified Mailyan as an extreme outlier in Medicare billing for Botox. She faces up to 20 years in prison per wire fraud count and five years per obstruction count, though her sentencing date has not yet been set.
