California real estate agent faces probation and fines after price gouging fire victims

A Southern California real estate agent, Mike Kobeissi, has been sentenced to 12 months of probation, 100 hours of community service, and a mandatory ethics course following an investigation into his attempts to exploit fire victims.

The case emerged after a couple evacuated due to the Eaton Fire sought rental housing but were met with a 38% rent increase on a property listed by Kobeissi.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized that price gouging during emergencies is illegal, warning against profiting from others' misfortune. The victim couple had applied for a home in La Cañada Flintridge but rejected the offer after the inflated rental cost.Kobeissi was also ordered to pay $20,000 into a disaster relief fund and issue an apology.
