Calls for Suspension of IDAC Head Amid Legal Controversies

Public Interest South Africa (PISA) has intensified calls for the suspension of Andrea Johnson, head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), following a series of admissions made under oath at the Madlanga Commission.

Johnson admitted that IDAC improperly requested an affidavit from National Coloured Congress leader Fadiel Adams, despite lacking legal authority to solicit complaints.

The affidavit, which formed part of an investigation into Brigadier Dineo Mokwele's appointment to Crime Intelligence, initially named three officials but expanded to 12 names, allegedly added by IDAC's own investigator.

Commission chair Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga criticized Johnson for applying an incorrect legal test, stating even a first-year law student would know better.

Johnson also contradicted earlier testimony to Parliament, admitting her office received correspondence from former police minister Senzo Mchunu weeks before Adams' formal complaint.

PISA has raised concerns about unlawful disclosure of protected information in a criminal complaint against Feroz Khan and requested the State Security Agency review Johnson's security clearance.

The Office of the IDAC Oversight Judge is handling separate complaints, while Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi may recommend her suspension to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
