High Court orders President Ruto to correct gender imbalance in Cabinet within 120 days
University student leaders in Kenya have intensified calls for the resignation of Youth Affairs and Creative Economy Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs following the fatal shooting of Cecil Ouma, a former Technical University of Kenya (TUK) student.
The incident reportedly occurred during a youth engagement programme held in Kariokor, Starehe constituency in Nairobi, where Ouma had mobilised around 60 young people to attend the event.
According to accounts cited by student leaders, the youths were allegedly promised payment for attendance, and the PS is said to have issued KSh 10,000 intended for distribution among them, which was rejected by the group.
Reports further claim that Ouma later followed the PS to his vehicle seeking additional payment, after which he was allegedly shot by a bodyguard attached to the PS’s convoy.
His body was later reportedly abandoned along the roadside, although official investigations are still ongoing and no formal determination of responsibility has been made by authorities.
University student representatives, including officials from the University of Nairobi Students Association, have demanded that the PS steps aside to allow for independent and transparent investigations.
They have also called for the immediate arrest of the alleged bodyguard involved in the shooting, arguing that accountability must be ensured without interference. The students have further warned of sustained demonstrations targeting the PS’s office at Talanta Plaza until clear explanations are provided.
The incident has sparked widespread public concern and mourning within the student community, with leaders emphasising the need for justice and transparency as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Cecil Ouma’s death.
