Canada has officially been announced as a participant in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, marking a significant expansion of the long-running international music competition beyond Europe.
The announcement was made by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which confirmed that Canada’s national public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada, has joined as a full member, enabling the country’s entry. This makes Canada the first new country to join Eurovision since Australia’s inclusion in 2015, highlighting the contest’s continued global reach. The 2027 edition of Eurovision is scheduled to take place in Bulgaria, following that country’s win in the 2026 contest held in Vienna.
That event reportedly drew an audience of around 131 million viewers worldwide, underscoring Eurovision’s status as one of the largest live televised music events.EBU officials emphasized that while the contest has European roots, it continues to welcome participation from outside the continent.Eurovision director Martin Green noted that the inclusion of new countries reflects the evolving and international nature of the competition.
CBC/Radio-Canada president Marie-Philippe Bouchard also highlighted that Canada’s participation will help showcase Canadian musical talent on a global stage and bring the event closer to Canadian audiences.
With this move, Canada joins a small group of non-European participants in Eurovision history, signalling a broader cultural outreach and potentially increasing North American engagement with the contest.
The announcement has been framed as both a milestone for Canadian broadcasting and a notable development in the evolution of Eurovision’s global identity.
