A man arrested in connection with a violent attack on a woman at Kitsilano Beach in Vancouver has been released from custody after spending less than 48 hours in detention, according to Vancouver police.The incident occurred on June 28 just before 2 p.m.
, when police received multiple 911 calls reporting that a woman had been struck on the head with a piece of wood while walking along the beach with her partner.Witnesses described the object used in the attack as a piece of lumber or driftwood roughly the size and thickness of a baseball bat.Emergency responders transported the victim to hospital for treatment of her injuries.Police have stated that she is expected to recover.Following the attack, officers located and arrested a suspect inside a nearby store close to the beach.The accused, identified as Carlos Caldera Duarte, has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the accused was released on Tuesday under court-imposed conditions after spending less than two days in custody.He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 7.
