Jacob Tsimerman, a mathematics professor at the University of Toronto, has been awarded the Fields Medal, the most prestigious honor in mathematics, for his contributions to arithmetic and complex algebraic geometry.

Tsimerman, the first mathematician based at a Canadian institution to receive the award, emphasized the importance of collaboration in his work, which includes advancing o-minimality and proving key conjectures like Griffiths' and Andre-Oort.His achievement marks a historic milestone for Canadian academia, as he joins Manjul Bhargava (2014) as the second Canadian to win the prize.The medal, accompanied by a cash prize, is awarded every four years to mathematicians under 40.Other 2026 recipients include Yu Deng (University of Chicago), John Pardon (Stony Brook University), and Hong Wang (New York University).The award, named after Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields, highlights Canada's growing influence in global mathematical research.
