Chadema and Registrar of Political Parties in renewed dispute over compliance and disciplinary warning

Chadema party has once again found itself in tension with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties in Tanzania after receiving a fresh warning letter, even as it was presenting an assessment of damages suffered during a period when it was restricted from political activities.

The Registrar issued a new notice asking the opposition party to explain alleged violations of political party regulations and why it should not face sanctions such as suspension or fines.

This development comes shortly after a previous communication dated May 7, 2026, which also demanded explanations over alleged breaches of the Political Parties Act.Although Chadema responded to that letter on May 26, the Registrar claims new violations have emerged based on recent statements by party leaders.

The party has already filed a court case and obtained an injunction from the High Court in Babati preventing immediate action by the Registrar, but the Registrar insists the latest notice concerns separate allegations.

The current accusations include alleged misconduct during public rallies, with video clips reportedly showing abusive language by a Chadema regional chairperson.

The Registrar argues this violates sections of the Political Parties Act and public meeting regulations, and has given the party a deadline of June 8, 2026 to respond.

Meanwhile, Chadema leaders, including Vice Chairperson John Heche, say the party suffered significant damage to property and operations during a 309-day restriction period, including deteriorated infrastructure and broken vehicles.Heche also raised concerns about lost political opportunities and accused authorities of bias in past legal processes.

The party has also introduced stricter conditions for former members seeking to rejoin, especially those who previously sued or acted against the party.

At the same time, some former members insist they still belong to Chadema and continue to push for resolution of internal disputes, particularly regarding asset distribution between Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions between Chadema and regulatory authorities, alongside internal restructuring and reconciliation challenges within the opposition party.
