Challenges and Reform Ahead for Australia's National Anti-Corruption Commission

Paul Brereton, inaugural head of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), appeared before Senate estimates hearings amid scrutiny over the agency's early performance.

Brereton, who announced plans to resign in July, faced questions about mishandled robodebt referrals and inadequate conflict of interest declarations, prompting public criticism and eroding trust in the NACC.Two investigations by the commission's independent inspector, Gail Furness, are currently examining Brereton's conduct.

Despite these issues, Brereton highlighted that the NACC has assessed 92% of its 7,624 referrals and has 34 active investigations into politicians, public servants, and contractors.Concerns were raised about staff being fearful of making mistakes, which could affect the agency's effectiveness.

The government, led by Attorney-General Michelle Rowland, is planning a 'reset' under a new commissioner, emphasising transparency, stronger parliamentary oversight, and clearer conditions for public hearings.

Crossbenchers like Helen Haines and Greens senator David Shoebridge stress the importance of improved processes, timely updates to complainants, and avoiding a politicised approach.

Analysts suggest the NACC requires a serious overhaul to restore public confidence, with careful selection of leadership and better engagement with parliamentary scrutiny being critical steps for its next phase.
