The Crown has temporarily halted charges against Ilan Philosophe, the founder of Astro Excavating Inc., who is accused of coordinating shootings at the homes of two executives linked to GFL Environmental Inc.Court records indicate the case was stayed on Thursday, giving the prosecution one year to revive it.

Philosophe was arrested in April 2025 on firearms and conspiracy charges related to twin attacks on the residences of GFL CEO Patrick Dovigi and businessman Ted Manziaris in late September 2024.

The shootings, which occurred within an hour, were attributed to an unknown gunman believed to be part of a wider shooter-for-hire network in the GTA.While no injuries were reported, the incidents have disrupted GFL operations.

The case remains linked to ongoing investigations into attacks on GFL and its affiliated companies, with police stating evidence from these probes may impact Philosophe’s case.His lawyer has not commented, and Philosophe previously denied involvement in the violence, blaming GFL for a bullying campaign against his company.
