The China Coast Guard (CCG) used water cannons to attack Philippine vessels in Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal) on July 24, 2026, escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea.According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the CCG fired at three vessels: BRP Cape San Agustin, BRP Datu Paduhinog, and BRP Datu Sumakwel.

The attacks occurred during routine deliveries of food and fuel to fisherfolk, with the CCG vessel 21581 directly hitting the Datu Paduhinog and causing temporary satellite internet loss.Chinese Maritime Militia vessel 00318 also pulled a rope behind the Datu Sumakwel, endangering navigation.The PCG emphasized that Bajo de Masinloc is part of Philippine territory and highlighted the 2016 Arbitral Award affirming Filipino fishing rights.

This incident follows previous confrontations, including a physical assault on Filipino servicemen in Ayungin Shoal and a meeting between President Marcos Jr.and Chinese envoy Jing Quan.The PCG condemned the actions as illegal and coercive, stressing the need to protect Philippine sovereignty and maritime rights.
