Cotabato's Indigenous Crafts Sustained Through Government Initiatives

The provincial government of Cotabato, led by Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza, has launched a program to sustain indigenous crafts and trades that provide income for marginalized communities.

A recent workshop in Magpet town, facilitated by provincial officials and the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority, trained men and women from the Ubo Manobo tribe in abaca twine production. This initiative aims to boost productivity in remote areas and preserve traditional crafts.

Taliño-Mendoza's office plans to expand the program to other towns with tribal domains, including Moro areas, to support socio-economic development and peacebuilding efforts.

The program underscores the government's commitment to cultural preservation and economic empowerment through indigenous crafts, which are vital for many communities in Cotabato's 17 towns and 40 barangays.By fostering skills development and promoting these crafts, the initiative seeks to create sustainable livelihoods while honoring local traditions.
