Defense challenges NBI affidavit timeline in Sara Duterte impeachment case
The defense team of Vice President Sara Duterte has raised significant concerns about the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) probe into allegations of her threatening President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.during the impeachment trial's fourth day.
Defense lawyer Mark Vinluan highlighted alleged inconsistencies in the NBI investigation, including discrepancies in dates and docket numbers of documents submitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ).The DOJ returned the NBI's complaint in February 2025, citing a lack of sufficient evidence despite the NBI forwarding it on January 30, 2025.Vinluan questioned why the DOJ rejected the case if the NBI had conducted proper investigations and gathered witnesses.
Prosecution witness Jeremy Lotoc, former NBI cybercrime chief, stated that the DOJ requested additional evidence, including more affidavits from agents, before rejecting the complaint. The defense also pointed out manual alterations in the investigative forms, suggesting possible tampering.
While the prosecution maintains the grave threats allegations against Duterte remain valid, the defense argues these inconsistencies undermine the case's credibility. The trial continues as both sides present their arguments on the validity of the NBI's findings.
