A Delhi court has allowed activist Umar Khalid to continue having two supervised video meetings, or e-mulakats, with his family every week while he remains in judicial custody.

The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Court on July 13 after Khalid challenged the reduction of his weekly video meetings from two to one, a change that had been implemented in May 2026.

His counsel argued that he had been receiving two e-mulakats every week since the beginning of his incarceration nearly six years ago and that the facility had been curtailed without any stated reason, despite there being no violation of prison rules on his part.

The jail authorities opposed the request, stating that the Delhi Prison Rules provide for only one weekly e-mulakat, while the Delhi Police also objected, citing security concerns regarding regular communication.However, the court observed that the video meetings are conducted under supervision and therefore adequately address security considerations.It also noted that Khalid had consistently complied with prison regulations while availing the facility over the years.

Taking into account both humanitarian considerations and his record of compliance, the court permitted him to continue with two weekly video meetings so that he could remain in touch with his mother and other family members.

Umar Khalid is facing trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code in the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.The trial is still underway, while Khalid has remained in jail for around six years.
