Himanta Biswa Sarma tells Gauhati High Court allegations rely on selective quotes from interviews
The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Union Government and social media platform X in response to a petition challenging the blocking of the Cockroach Janta Party’s official account.
The petition was filed by the party’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, after the account was suspended by the platform, which had gained significant attention online as a satire-driven political commentary initiative.
The matter came up before Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, who allowed the petitioner to appear virtually before the review committee that examines such blocking decisions.
During the hearing, the court observed that if the review committee finds the blocking unjustified, it has the authority to direct restoration of the account.
The judge also noted that the law governing online content blocking is still at a developing stage and therefore the court should not rush into interim directions without proper examination of the facts and responses from the authorities. The court directed that the review committee should examine all relevant aspects and place its decision on record before the next hearing.
Senior advocate Akhil Sibal, representing the petitioner, argued that the account represented political satire and that even if some posts were considered objectionable, the entire account should not have been suspended.
The court, however, pointed out that the blocking order was not yet on record and indicated that it would consider further relief after receiving responses from the Centre and X.The matter has been listed for further hearing on July 7.
