Delhi High Court Supports Government's Action to Shift Fasting Activist Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital

The Delhi High Court has rejected a plea by Gitanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, seeking his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to a private facility like Medanta.

The court observed that the government acted within its rights as Wangchuk was shifted on medical advice after his prolonged hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.

Justice Mini Pushkarna noted that no force was used in the process and that Wangchuk's family has been given round-the-clock unrestricted access to him at the government hospital. The activist was moved to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday following directions from authorities citing his critical health condition.Doctors reported that his potassium levels were dangerously low.The court highlighted that Wangchuk had consented to oral medications but refused IV fluids. It emphasised that every life is precious and urged him to cooperate with medical professionals for his well-being.

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite fast since 28th June, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in national exams including the NEET paper leak. The bench has asked for a status report on his health within three days and listed the matter for further hearing on 24th July.

This development comes amid ongoing protests and highlights the balance between individual rights and public health responsibilities during such demonstrations.
