Tanzania's transport sector is slowly transforming with the help of digital technology, government officials and industry experts said during the Bolt Tanzania Mobility Dialogue 2026.
The Ministry of Transport is keen to build a modern, safe, and inclusive transport system, with technology at the heart of service delivery and regulation.
Platforms like ride-hailing services have increased efficiency, accessibility, and safety, while also becoming a key source of income for many Tanzanians. However, challenges remain, including low adoption of electric vehicles compared to countries like Kenya.Experts highlighted the need for better infrastructure, incentives, and collaboration between government and private sector to encourage EV use.Stakeholders also stressed the importance of trust, fairness, and continuous dialogue to sustain growth.
Beyond transport, digital platforms can help integrate informal workers, like bodaboda riders, into formal financial systems, including insurance, savings, and social security.
Overall, technology is seen as a crucial tool for improving mobility, supporting economic participation, and modernising Tanzania's transport system.
