ATDF-ASA challenges SAPS over use of force during N3 protest
The All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF-SA) has denied involvement in violent disruptions along the N3 near Bergville, following a protest demanding that road freight jobs be reserved for South Africans. The protest led to the arrest of three individuals, including the ATDF-SA secretary general, on allegations of public violence and incitement.ATDF-SA claims the demonstration was a peaceful go-slow and that the police escalated the situation by firing live ammunition, causing panic.Evidence of bullets in a truck container was cited to support their claims.
On the other hand, KwaZulu-Natal police presented a different account, stating that they found people stopping trucks on the highway, and after a chase, arrested three individuals linked to the incident, including an abandoned bakkie with stones and a banner from the forum.Police are investigating further, and additional charges may be laid. The allegations of excessive police force by ATDF-SA remain unverified, and SAPS had not responded to the claims at the time of reporting. This incident highlights tensions between industrial action by truck drivers and law enforcement during protests on South African roads.
