Two Woolworths stores in South Africa have been affected by separate explosive incidents within a 24-hour period, prompting heightened security measures and an ongoing investigation by law enforcement authorities.

The first incident occurred at the Woolworths branch in Menlyn Mall, Pretoria, where an explosive device detonated inside the store in the early hours of Thursday morning, around 1am.At the time, five packers were working inside the premises, restocking shelves.Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the explosion caused damage to food items and shelving.A second incident took place the following day at the Woolworths outlet in Preller Square, Bloemfontein, at approximately 3am on Friday.

Police confirmed that an explosive device had detonated inside the store, leading to the involvement of the Hawks, South Africa’s elite investigative unit.Explosives experts and other emergency response teams were deployed to secure and examine the scene.Authorities have not yet confirmed whether a second device was present or if there is any connection between the two incidents.Woolworths confirmed both explosions in a statement, noting that the devices were detonated during hours when the stores were closed to the public.The retailer also said that some staff members have been affected emotionally and are receiving support.

As a precaution, Woolworths has increased security and surveillance across all its branches nationwide and has brought in specialist forensic experts to assist with investigations alongside law enforcement.

Incoming Group CEO Sam Ngumeni emphasised the company’s commitment to protecting staff and customers, stating that the business will continue operating while strengthening its safety measures.

Investigations into the motive and circumstances behind the explosions are ongoing, with authorities still working to determine whether the incidents are linked.
