Government Responds to Concerns Over Utumishi Girls Academy Fire During National Prayer Breakfast
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered immediate changes to President William Ruto’s security detail following a security breach that happened during a public event in Ganze, Kilifi County.
In a statement released on Saturday, May 24, the National Police Service described the incident as a major security lapse and a matter of serious national concern.
Kanja confirmed that a special investigations team has already been formed to carry out a detailed inquiry into how the breach happened and whether there were failures within the president’s protection unit.
According to the IG, the restructuring of the security team is meant to strengthen operational procedures and close any weaknesses that may expose the president to danger during public engagements. He emphasised that the investigation will be swift, thorough, and uncompromising.
The move comes amid increasing concerns over repeated incidents where President Ruto’s security has been challenged during rallies and development tours across the country. The article also recalled previous cases involving the president’s safety. In May 2025, videos circulated online showing an object hitting Ruto’s left arm while he was addressing supporters.
Another incident occurred on April 28 during a development tour in Soweto, Lang’ata, where a white object believed to be a bottle was thrown at him from the crowd.Although security officers reacted quickly and surrounded the president, no suspect was immediately arrested.
These repeated incidents have raised questions about the effectiveness of the elite security units assigned to protect the head of state, including the Presidential Security Unit and the General Service Unit. The latest directive by Kanja is expected to lead to tighter security measures during future presidential events.
