Gerda Steyn claims fifth Comrades Marathon victory with new up-run record
The eThekwini Municipality has issued an advisory detailing extensive road closures ahead of the 99th Comrades Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, 14 June 2026.
The iconic ultra-marathon, known as the Ultimate Human Race, will follow an “up run” route from Durban to Pietermaritzburg and is expected to draw around 21,600 athletes, alongside approximately 65,000 spectators travelling from across South Africa and abroad.Authorities have confirmed that several major routes will be affected throughout race day.
These include Dr Pixley KaSeme Street, Joseph Nduli Road, the N3 West off-ramp to King Cetshwayo Highway (with contra-flow arrangements via 45th Cutting to the M13 and Cowies Hill), Josiah Gumede Road in Pinetown, the M13 through Kloof, Gillitts and Old Main Road into Hillcrest, as well as the R103 towards Cato Ridge via Doonrug Road.
All impacted roads will be reopened progressively once the last runners have passed through each section, ensuring minimal disruption beyond race operations.
The municipality highlighted the Comrades Marathon as a major economic driver for the region, boosting sectors such as hospitality, transport, retail, and tourism.
Small businesses are expected to benefit significantly from increased visitor numbers over the marathon weekend, with around 1,300 temporary job opportunities also anticipated.To manage the event, a comprehensive operational plan has been activated across multiple municipal departments.
Waste management teams have been deployed along the route from Durban City Hall to Cato Ridge to maintain cleanliness, manage waste collection, and encourage responsible disposal through strategically placed bins.
Officials emphasised that the coordinated approach aims to ensure a safe, clean, and well-organised environment for athletes, spectators, and visitors throughout the event.
