Eight arrested in ₹12 crore sugar factory fraud case
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) personnel seized a sum of ₹6.14 lakh from the Orathanadu Taluk Agriculture Extension Centre on July 10 after receiving complaints from farmers about rampant corruption during the disbursement of the 'kuruvai special package scheme' benefits. The DVAC Thanjavur Unit raided the office, and officials at the agri-office fled with currency notes through windows upon seeing the raid team.
The seized cash was collected by DVAC personnel, and a detailed investigation has been initiated to probe the allegations of bribery and misuse of public funds. This incident highlights systemic issues in agricultural welfare schemes, where officials allegedly siphoned off benefits meant for farmers.
The case underscores the need for transparency in rural development programs and the role of anti-corruption bodies in holding authorities accountable.Farmers' grievances about 'greasing of palms' during benefit distribution indicate a lack of trust in local governance mechanisms.
The DVAC's action serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in preventing embezzlement in public welfare schemes, especially in rural areas where such funds are critical for livelihoods.
