Wiebe helps Saskatchewan Roughriders secure comeback victory against Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Edmonton Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo is expressing optimism about the team’s retooled receiving corps heading into the 2026 CFL season. After an off-season focused on improving size, versatility, and playmaking ability at the wide receiver position, the team has introduced key additions while retaining important contributors from last year.Although the Elks lost standout receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr.to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, they addressed the gap by signing experienced free agents Austin Mack and Brendan O’Leary-Orange.
Head coach Mark Kilam emphasized that the team specifically targeted receivers who could stretch the field vertically, contribute physically in blocking situations, and offer flexibility in multiple roles.Training camp has been highly competitive, with several emerging players also pushing for roster spots.Returning receivers Kaion Julien-Grant and Binjimen Victor are expected to play significant roles.Julien-Grant led the team in 2025 with 57 receptions for 820 yards and seven touchdowns, while Victor contributed 33 catches in his first CFL season. Both players are seen as key pieces in maintaining continuity within the offence.
Austin Mack’s arrival is particularly notable due to his previous success with Fajardo during their time together in Montreal, including a Grey Cup win.Mack recorded 78 receptions for over 1,100 yards in 2023 with Fajardo as his quarterback, demonstrating strong on-field chemistry.Fajardo highlighted this connection as a major advantage and a reason he actively supported Mack’s recruitment.Veteran presence is also expected to benefit younger players.
Victor noted that experienced teammates like Mack, Julien-Grant, and O’Leary-Orange provide valuable guidance in understanding the nuances of the CFL game.
The Elks will continue evaluating their roster during the pre-season, with one final exhibition game against Calgary before opening the regular season in Ottawa.
