EFCC intervention leads to staff getting overdue promotion payments after years of diversion claims

Staff of Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State, have finally started receiving their overdue promotion arrears after years of allegations that the funds were diverted by the institution's Rector.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigated claims that the Rector directed microfinance banks to divert the money into another account, leading to the arrest of the Managing Director of Sincere Microfinance Bank. The Office of the Accountant General initially disbursed the funds in June 2024, but the Rector allegedly instructed banks to redirect the money.

Staff unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), petitioned EFCC, which then coordinated with microfinance banks to resume payments.

The development has reignited debates about the Rector's previous denials of diversion, with staff arguing that the delayed payments reflect a loss in value due to inflation.ASUP's Chairman, Yemi Alabi, called the resolution a victory but demanded penalties for the management's misconduct. The case highlights ongoing issues of financial mismanagement and corruption in public institutions.
