At the Rabat Diamond League in Morocco, Emmanuel Wanyonyi finished second in the men's 800m on Sunday, May 31, despite entering the race as the favourite.Max Burgin of Britain took first place with a season's best time of 1:42.98, while Wanyonyi crossed the line at 1:43.56, also a season's best.Algeria's Moula Slimane came third at 1:43.73.For his runner-up finish, Wanyonyi earned 6,000 USD (approximately KSh 776,000), while Burgin walked away with 10,000 USD (KSh 1.2 million), and Slimane got 4,000 USD (KSh 517,000).
Wanyonyi expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting the race was tough and that his focus this season remains on the 800m rather than moving to 1500m.
Kenyan athletes also performed well: Lilian Odira secured third in the women's 800m, earning 4,000 USD, while Simon Koech placed third in the men's 3000m steeplechase, earning 4,000 USD.Julius Yego threw 80.59m to finish fifth in the men's javelin, pocketing 2,500 USD.The Diamond League circuit continues with the Golden Gala in Rome on June 4.Overall, Kenyan athletes showcased strong performances despite stiff competition, and the event offered significant prize money for top finishes.
