Federal Judge Rules Kennedy Center Must Restore Original Name and Remove Trump's Name by June 12

A federal judge has ordered the John F.Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., to remove President Donald Trump's name from the institution and restore its original official name by June 12.

The decision follows a legal challenge to a December vote by the Kennedy Center's Trump-appointed board, which had renamed the venue 'The Donald J.Trump and The John F.Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.' According to U.S.

District Judge Christopher Cooper, the board exceeded its authority because the Kennedy Center's name was established by Congress, meaning only Congress has the legal power to alter it.

In response to the ruling, the center's general counsel directed staff to immediately begin updating official materials, including email signatures, letterhead, and other documents, to reflect the original name.Interior and exterior signage is also scheduled to be changed before the court-imposed deadline. The controversy has also affected broader plans for the institution. The Kennedy Center is still considering whether to proceed with a planned $257 million renovation project scheduled to begin on July 5.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum initially expressed uncertainty about compliance with the ruling, noting the possibility of an appeal and describing the issue as controversial.Meanwhile, Trump reportedly announced that he would withdraw his association with the center, criticizing the facility as being in poor condition. The ruling represents a significant legal reaffirmation of congressional authority over the naming of federally established cultural institutions.
