Lagos Convicts 16 for Illegal Waste Disposal
The Federal Government is planning to demolish some buildings along Lagos Coastal Highway to improve drainage and reduce flooding.Works Minister David Umahi stated that the highway isn't the main cause of flooding, blaming blocked drains, illegal reclamation, and poor urban planning instead.Affected property owners will be compensated, and the government will work with Lagos State on a broader flood-control program. The plan includes creating service lanes, additional drainage channels, and restoring natural waterways.Umahi acknowledged that difficult decisions, like removing structures blocking drainage, are necessary for long-term solutions. The inspection was ordered by President Bola Tinubu after public concerns about flooding.Officials from various agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Environment and National Assembly members, were involved. The minister emphasized that the highway helps convey floodwater and protects against ocean surges.
Contractors like Hitech Construction Company pledged to clear blocked culverts, while the President's office will run sensitization campaigns on waste disposal and drainage maintenance.Experts noted that Lagos flooding is a complex issue driven by climate change, rapid urbanization, and inadequate planning.
