First Nations Protesters Arrested at Victoria Park Ahead of Olympic Stadium Construction

Authorities in Brisbane moved in on First Nations protesters at Victoria Park who are opposing the planned 2032 Olympic stadium. The standoff involved two main camps: the Goori Camp Embassy, consisting of First Nations supporters, and Barrambin Djar, occupied by the local Jaggera people. The confrontation was largely non-violent, but tensions rose when ceremonial fires were lit and police reinforcements arrived.

Elder Uncle Derek Oram led the initial opposition, asking authorities to allow the protesters to move behind the park fence once it is erected on 1 June.Despite these calls, police arrested at least two protesters, including Oram.Local elder Gaja Kerry Charlton described the intervention as an abuse of power and expressed concern for the safety of those involved.

The Brisbane Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) will formally take control of the land on Monday, closing the park to the public to begin construction on the 63,000-seat stadium.

The stadium is set to host athletics events, opening and closing ceremonies during the 2032 Olympics, and later serve as Brisbane’s primary venue for AFL and cricket following the demolition of the Gabba. This marks the second recent confrontation between protesters and authorities, highlighting ongoing tensions around the Olympic development.
