Five persons, including two children, die in Abeokuta–Lagos expressway bus crash

No fewer than five persons, among them two children, lost their lives on Thursday in a road accident that happened at Iyana Egbado along the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash involved a white Mazda E2000 commercial bus with registration number KRD 809 XC, which was carrying about 20 passengers at the time of the incident.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, the bus had six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child, and two female children on board.

Out of the 20 passengers, the accident claimed the lives of one adult male, two adult females, one male child, and one female child, while 10 other passengers sustained various degrees of injuries.Five passengers reportedly escaped without injuries.

The crash was said to have occurred around 11:12am and was quickly reported, with FRSC rescue operatives arriving the scene within about five minutes to carry out emergency response operations.Preliminary findings by FRSC pointed to excessive speeding and overloading as the likely causes of the crash.

The injured victims were rushed to General Hospital, Ifo, and Oreofe Specialist Hospital in Itori for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.

The Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and advised motorists to always avoid over-speeding, overloading, and other dangerous driving habits.

He further stressed that road safety is everybody’s responsibility and called for strict compliance with traffic rules, especially during busy travel periods.
