Hayden Davies, a former British soldier, has been sentenced to 15 years in a Russian maximum-security prison after being captured in Ukraine while serving in the Ukrainian army's foreign legion.Convicted of mercenaryism, Davies faces a sentence originally of 13 years, extended by two years by a Moscow court.The UK government does not recognise the Russian-controlled court in Donetsk, where he was tried, and continues to provide limited consular support.In letters to the BBC, Davies recounts surviving a serious leg injury and hiding for two months before capture, enduring extreme pain and isolation.He reports a lack of communication from British officials and insufficient medical care.Human rights organisations and activists highlight systematic neglect of prisoners of war in Russian custody.The International Red Cross also notes restricted access to detainees.

Activist Anastasia Shevchenko has facilitated correspondence and assistance, stressing that the UK could do more to support Davies, including prison support and advocacy.

Other former British prisoners, like Shaun Pinner, describe similar challenges, emphasising that diplomatic access to POWs in Russia is extremely limited.

The FCDO reiterates the need for Russia to respect international law and the Geneva Conventions while warning UK citizens that participation in foreign conflicts carries legal risks and minimal government support.
