Former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan was taken to the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital after voluntarily surrendering to authorities on Monday, following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Sandiganbayan.

According to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Bonoan presented himself to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) at Camp Crame in Quezon City, where he underwent initial processing procedures along with other accused individuals in the case.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that Bonoan will remain under hospital care for an undetermined period until medical authorities determine that he is fit to stand trial.Once cleared, he will be transferred to the Sandiganbayan for further legal proceedings.

Remulla emphasized that Bonoan is under full security and will have restricted movement while in custody, ensuring that he cannot leave the facility without authorization.

The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division had earlier issued warrants of arrest against several individuals, including Senator Jinggoy Estrada, Bonoan, and multiple officials from the DPWH National Capital Region office, after finding probable cause in connection with graft and corruption allegations linked to government projects.All individuals named in the warrant have since been placed under custody either through arrest or voluntary surrender.

Remulla also confirmed that Estrada was arrested at the Senate and read his Miranda rights in the presence of legal counsel before being brought to CIDG headquarters for booking procedures, including fingerprinting, mugshots, and medical checks.Bonoan and the other accused underwent similar processing.Authorities reiterated that there would be no special treatment for any of the accused.Remulla also recounted a brief emotional incident involving Estrada’s daughter during the arrest process.As of Monday afternoon, all accused were being prepared for turnover to the Sandiganbayan for continued legal proceedings.
