Assam District Orders Deportation of Man Deemed Foreigner
Four individuals from West Bengal's Birbhum district, who were allegedly forced into Bangladesh in June 2025, were finally brought back to India after a prolonged legal battle.
The group, including Sunali Khatun (who was pregnant at the time), her husband Danish Sheikh, and their son Sabir, had been detained in Delhi and sent to Bangladesh.
The Supreme Court had ordered their deportation to West Bengal within four weeks, but the Union government challenged the order, leading to a judicial intervention. The individuals claimed they were Indian citizens, and their return was facilitated after the Centre agreed to verify their citizenship. The case highlights the complexities of deportation procedures and the challenges faced by individuals unable to prove their Indian identity.
The incident also reflects broader concerns about the treatment of Bengali-speaking Muslims in BJP-ruled states, where some have been detained for allegedly failing to prove their citizenship.
The return of these individuals marks the end of a year-long legal struggle, underscoring the intersection of law, citizenship, and human rights in India.
