Fourteen-year-old Unathi Nkuta makes professional ballet debut in a principal role with Mzansi Ballet

Unathi Nkuta, a 14-year-old Grade 8 learner at Reddam House Bedfordview, has reached a significant milestone in her ballet career by making her professional debut in a principal role with Mzansi Ballet.

She performed in the production 'Michael Jackson — Heal the World' at the Pieter Toerien Theatre in Montecasino, a show centred on themes of resilience, healing and self-discovery.Although she was thrilled to be selected, Nkuta said she only fully appreciated the significance of the achievement once rehearsals began.

Nkuta explained that the production's story resonated with her because it focuses on overcoming challenges, accepting oneself and finding strength through difficult experiences. She described it as an honour to bring such a meaningful story to life through ballet and the music of Michael Jackson.

Her journey in dance began at the age of six after her mother encouraged her to try ballet, inspired by the fact that she often walked on her tiptoes as a child.Since attending her first class, she has developed a deep passion for the art form.Balancing school responsibilities with demanding rehearsals has required discipline and strong time-management skills.Nkuta said she works hard to stay organised, complete schoolwork early and make effective use of her time.

She acknowledged that managing energy levels and fitting in school, homework and rehearsals can be challenging, but support from her teachers, classmates and family has helped her succeed.Through ballet, she has learnt valuable life lessons including discipline, resilience and patience.Looking to the future, Nkuta hopes to continue excelling academically while pursuing her ballet ambitions.

She also dreams of competing in the Miss South Africa pageant and using the platform to promote arts and culture, especially ballet, in underprivileged communities and to create opportunities for young people to experience the benefits of the arts.
