Pemra suspends Geo News license over Muharram documentary controversy
Geo News, a Pakistani news channel, has resumed its transmission after a 15-day suspension imposed by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).
The suspension was ordered due to the channel's depiction of religious figures in a broadcast aired on Muharram 10, which violated Pemra regulations.Pemra warned that any future violations could result in the cancellation of Geo News' broadcasting licence. The channel was allowed to resume transmissions on Sunday midnight after the suspension period expired.
Pemra's final order, issued after its 191st meeting, stated that the decision was based on a detailed review of the case, including recommendations from the Council of Complaints and the Pemra Ordinance 2002.The authority emphasized that the violation was serious and inconsistent with the obligations of a licence holder.
While acknowledging Geo News' apology and admission of negligence, Pemra maintained that the legal consequences of the violation could not be overlooked. The channel was also fined Rs10 million and required to complete disciplinary proceedings against those responsible for the lapse.
Pemra further directed Geo News to establish in-house monitoring committees and ensure strict compliance with the Supreme Court's judgment on media regulations. The authority warned that any future violations would face stricter legal action.
