George Russell claims Canadian Grand Prix sprint victory after tense battle with teammate Kimi Antonelli

George Russell secured victory in the Canadian Grand Prix sprint race at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after starting from pole position for Mercedes.

The British driver controlled the race over 23 laps and earned his second sprint win of the 2026 Formula One season, following his earlier success in China.

McLaren driver and reigning world champion Lando Norris finished second, while Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli crossed the line in third after a heated battle with his teammate. The key moment of the race came early when Antonelli attempted to overtake Russell for the lead.

The two Mercedes drivers made contact as Russell defended his position aggressively, forcing Antonelli wide and allowing Norris to move ahead into second place.Antonelli was visibly frustrated over team radio, accusing Russell of pushing him off the track and calling for a penalty against the Briton.Race engineer Peter Bonnington attempted to calm the young Italian driver, but Antonelli continued to complain during the race.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff eventually intervened over the radio, instructing Antonelli to focus on driving instead of arguing about the incident.Wolff later said the matter would be discussed privately after the race.

Behind the leading trio, Oscar Piastri finished fourth for McLaren, followed by Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in fifth and sixth.Max Verstappen ended seventh for Red Bull, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad claimed the final point in eighth place.

The sprint result reduced Antonelli’s championship lead to 18 points ahead of qualifying for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix, where the 19-year-old Italian will aim for a fourth consecutive victory.
