On Wednesday, almost 300 Ghanaian nationals voluntarily returned to Ghana from South Africa, in what migration expert Loren Landau describes as an unprecedented development in post-apartheid South Africa.

This large-scale repatriation is unusual because it involves a foreign African government actively organising the safe return of its citizens from a democratic African state facing increasing anti-immigrant sentiment.Only 10 of the 300 had legal residency status; the remainder were undocumented or overstaying.

Ghanaian authorities emphasised that the repatriation was voluntary, and the government will provide reintegration support, including financial aid and job resources.Landau noted that while deportations between countries are common, state-assisted voluntary repatriation is rare and highly symbolic.The move highlights broader concerns about xenophobia, migration policy, and South Africa’s social and economic challenges.Some experts argue that migration issues are often used politically to distract from failures in governance, unemployment, and public services.

The repatriation is seen as a visible marker of growing tensions and a shift towards inward nationalism, rather than a solution to migration challenges.
