The South African government has strongly condemned illegal initiation schools, which are undermining the integrity of traditional practices through criminal activities.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa highlighted that since the start of the 2026 winter initiation season, 180 initiates have been rescued from fraudulent schools, while 75 others have been hospitalised.During this period, 35 boys have died, and 12 abductions have been reported.A preliminary report by the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) revealed that 58 illegal schools were opened in 2026, with 42 closed.The government urges parents to use only registered schools to protect the safety and dignity of initiates.The issue raises concerns about the risks associated with unregulated practices, including potential health hazards and exploitation.Authorities are working to address these challenges while balancing cultural traditions with public safety.
