Sport, arts and culture minister Gayton McKenzie has allocated R3 million to support the national men’s and women’s hockey teams for the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 14 to 30.This decision follows public outcry and concerns from athletes who had to cover their own travel, accommodation, and medical expenses.

The South African Hockey Association (SAHA) faced a R3m shortfall, with players reporting costs of R68,137 per person for flights, meals, and recovery.McKenzie acknowledged the frustration, stating that athletes should not bear financial burdens for representing their country.The funds will be transferred once SAHA submits a detailed report on the funding crisis and outlines spending plans.The minister emphasized that representing South Africa is a national honour, not a personal financial responsibility.This move aims to ensure the team can compete effectively on the global stage without additional financial strain.
