The Government of Kenya has announced a full and comprehensive investigation into the tragic fire that broke out at Utumishi Girls Academy Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which has so far claimed the lives of 16 students and left several others injured.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen addressed the nation, assuring families and the public that all relevant agencies have been deployed to establish the cause of the deadly incident.

He emphasised that the government is standing with the affected families during this difficult moment, noting that many of the learners at the school are children of officers serving in the National Police Service, which has deepened the impact of the tragedy among security service families.Murkomen called on Kenyans to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.

He confirmed that teams from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), crime scene investigators, and officers from the Government Chemist are already on site conducting forensic analysis.The government intends to rely on scientific procedures, including DNA testing, to help identify victims and determine the exact cause of the fire.In response to the disaster, emergency and psychosocial support systems have been activated.A national emergency hotline number 119 has been set up to assist affected families and members of the public seeking help.

The Kenya Red Cross, working alongside national disaster response teams, is also providing counselling and psychosocial support to survivors, families, and the wider school community.

Authorities have reiterated that all efforts are being made to ensure transparency and accountability, while urging the public to allow investigators sufficient time to complete their work.The incident has sparked widespread national concern and mourning as the country awaits answers on what led to the devastating blaze.
