Government launches urban renewal programme covering 35 towns to improve infrastructure and housing

Tanzania has rolled out a major urban renewal programme targeting 35 towns and cities across the country in one of the most ambitious infrastructure development efforts in recent years.

The initiative is aimed at transforming poorly planned and deteriorating settlements into modern, well-organised urban spaces that can support the country’s rapid population growth and economic expansion.

According to the Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Dr Leonard Akwilapo, the programme covers 111 identified dilapidated areas spread over approximately 24,309 hectares in 25 regions.

The government has stated that the project will focus on improving essential infrastructure such as roads, drainage systems, housing quality, and overall urban planning.

This comes as many urban areas in Tanzania have experienced unplanned expansion over the years, leading to overcrowding, weak infrastructure, and poor living conditions.

To kick-start the initiative, a pilot redevelopment project has already begun in Makangira-Msasani in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, where authorities are working closely with local residents to ensure inclusive development.

The programme also aims to attract private sector investment by creating well-structured urban zones that are more appealing for commercial and residential development.

Officials believe that improved planning and infrastructure will increase land and property values, boost investor confidence, and generate employment opportunities in construction and related industries.

The Ministry of Lands will coordinate with local authorities and community groups to ensure smooth implementation while minimising displacement and maintaining community participation.

Experts have described the initiative as a key step towards sustainable urbanisation in Tanzania, though its success will depend on funding, coordination, and continued political commitment. The pilot project will serve as a model for future redevelopment across other towns.
