JAB Chairman urges Tanzanian media to prioritise quality and impactful journalism
Tanzania’s Prime Minister, Mwigulu Nchemba, successfully mediated a settlement for a land dispute that has troubled Msaranga Village, Rombo District, in Kilimanjaro Region for more than five decades. The conflict involved Mr.Peter Morisi and the Mtimhoo Parish under the Diocese of Moshi. The disagreement started over 51 years ago when Mr.
Morisi’s land was acquired for educational and religious purposes, and although he received a small compensation and alternative plot in 1980, he felt it was unfair. The long-standing dispute affected community harmony across generations.Following PM Nchemba’s visit to Kilimanjaro in February 2026, Mr.Morisi raised the matter during a public rally. The government quickly sent a specialized team to investigate and facilitate dialogue. After extensive consultations with the family, village leaders, Church officials, and the Diocese, both parties agreed to reconciliation. The Diocese contributed 5 million shillings as goodwill, matched by the Prime Minister for a total of 10 million shillings. Both sides received formal Customary Certificates of Right of Occupancy, legally confirming their land ownership and preventing future disputes.Community leaders welcomed the settlement, noting it will restore peace, unity, and promote development.Mr.Morisi expressed gratitude, emphasizing now he can live peacefully with the Church and neighbors. This resolution highlights Tanzania’s commitment to using dialogue and high-level intervention to solve deep-rooted community conflicts.
