The South African Department of Home Affairs has confirmed investigations into 15 religious leaders, including pastors and prophets, over allegations of obtaining immigration benefits through fraudulent means.

Special Investigating Unit (SIU) findings revealed 10 investigations concluded, with eight cases referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for potential prosecution.Two cases were closed after satisfactory resolutions, while five remain ongoing.Minister Dr Leon Schreiber emphasized the SIU's findings under Proclamation No.154 of 2024, noting the terms 'pastor' and 'prophet' were used interchangeably in the investigations.

The immigration benefits under scrutiny include temporary residence visas, permanent residence permits, and other immigration benefits administered under the Immigration Act, 2002.

Schreiber clarified that specific details about individuals or benefits cannot be disclosed due to ongoing investigations or NPA referrals, as premature disclosure could prejudice legal processes.The department plans to share additional information with Parliament once investigative and prosecutorial processes permit.

This follows a parliamentary inquiry by ATM MP Thandiswa Marawu regarding alleged collusion between officials and foreign religious leaders to secure immigration benefits unlawfully.
