Horohoro Border Trade Surges Due to Streamlined Procedures

Cross-border trade at the Horohoro One Stop Border Post between Tanzania and Kenya has seen a significant increase over the past three years, with export values rising nearly 80% due to streamlined procedures under the East African Community (EAC) framework. The border post, which handles both exports and imports, reported export values jumping from 306.4 billion Tanzanian shillings in 2022/23 to 548 billion shillings in 2024/25, while imports grew from 134.7 billion to 175.9 billion shillings.

The EAC Deputy Secretary General Annette Semuwamba visited the site to assess the implementation of the Simplified Trade Regime, which allows traders to complete all clearance procedures at a single location. This system has reduced cargo clearance times, lowered transportation costs, and improved coordination between Tanzanian and Kenyan border agencies.

The border post, which unites 19 government institutions, has adopted the Single Customs Territory arrangement, enabling customs declarations for Kenyan-origin goods to be processed before reaching Tanzania.

Small-scale traders benefit from simplified procedures, including the F88 declaration system and recognition of Kenyan Simplified Certificates of Origin. The collaboration between Tanzania and Kenya has led to 24-hour operations, enhancing trade efficiency and regional economic integration.
