An ongoing Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa has raised serious global concern after humanitarian organizations warned it could become the deadliest recorded outbreak if current conditions persist.

According to the International Rescue Committee, at least 223 deaths have already been reported across affected countries, with fears that ongoing conflict, weak health infrastructure, and funding shortages for global health programs could accelerate the spread.Officials compared the situation to the 2018–2020 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which caused more than 2,290 deaths.

The outbreak has been identified as involving the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a variant for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

Medical experts emphasize that care remains largely supportive, focusing on symptom management such as controlling fever, dehydration, vomiting, and blood pressure instability.

Researchers in the United Kingdom report that early-stage vaccine development is underway, with clinical trials potentially beginning within months, though effectiveness against this strain remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, existing vaccines like Merck’s Ervebo, which targets the Zaire strain, may offer limited cross-protection but are not guaranteed to be effective.

The World Health Organization and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention have both warned of rapid transmission risks, with multiple countries now considered vulnerable.The outbreak has also led to increased travel restrictions and enhanced screening at major U.S.airports, including Houston, Atlanta, and Washington D.C., for travelers from affected regions.

Several violent attacks on Ebola treatment centers have further complicated containment efforts, forcing patients to flee and disrupting medical response operations.Officials continue to stress international cooperation as essential to preventing further escalation.
