Health officials in Fremont, California, have issued a public warning after a bat found near a neighborhood sidewalk tested positive for rabies.The bat was discovered on May 26 near Palo Verde Common in South Fremont, in an area described by local police as being within reach of pedestrians and pets.Alameda County Vector Control later confirmed the animal was infected with the rabies virus.

Authorities emphasized that, as of now, no human or animal exposures have been identified in connection with the incident, but an investigation is ongoing.In response to the finding, local health agencies urged residents to avoid contact with bats and other wild animals, which can carry rabies.

Officials highlighted that rabies is a serious and often fatal disease affecting the brain and nervous system, but it can be prevented if medical treatment is administered quickly after exposure.Post-exposure prophylaxis, including a series of vaccinations, is highly effective when given promptly.

Residents were also advised to ensure pets are properly vaccinated against rabies, keep animals confined or supervised outdoors, and avoid leaving food sources that might attract wildlife.

Authorities further recommended that anyone who believes they may have been bitten or exposed contact the Alameda County Public Health Acute Communicable Disease Program immediately and seek medical attention.
