Bandits attack Ankpechi community in Benue State, residents flee
The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, in Niger State, has transferred its 41 pioneer 300-level MBBS students to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, so they can continue their clinical medical training without interruption.
The decision became necessary because IBBU is yet to have a fully operational teaching hospital and the required clinical training facilities needed for medical education.
Speaking to the students at the university's main campus in Lapai, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Sulaiman, explained that the relocation is a temporary but strategic measure to ensure the students do not experience delays in their academic programme.
He said the arrangement was achieved through the support and collaboration of the Niger State Government under Governor Umaru Bago, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, and other relevant stakeholders.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, construction of the university's temporary teaching hospital is progressing, with operations expected to begin by September 2026.Once the facility becomes functional, future medical students are expected to complete their clinical training within IBBU.
Following discussions between both institutions, ABU agreed to admit all 41 pioneer medical students into its College of Medical Sciences, where they will receive intensive tutorials and continue preparations for their professional examinations scheduled for September 2026.
The Provost of IBBU's College of Medical and Health Sciences, Professor Abubakar Aliyu, also said orientation sessions were organised to guide both 200-level and 300-level MBBS students on academic requirements and expectations. The relocation is expected to protect the students' academic progress while IBBU continues developing its own teaching hospital.
