Advocate Andrea Johnson has resigned as head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), citing sustained attacks on her leadership and reputational risks to the anti-corruption unit and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

In a letter to National Director of Public Prosecutions Andy Mothibi and President Cyril Ramaphosa, Johnson requested immediate release from office, waiving her three-month notice period.

She attributed the decision to unprecedented criticism over IDAC's investigations into South African Police Service officials and allegations against her conduct.

The resignation follows weeks of pressure after her testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where she conceded errors in her statements about senior Crime Intelligence figures.

Johnson acknowledged unresolved complaints against her but argued that further inquiries would be costly and time-consuming, warning that South Africa cannot afford additional scrutiny amid FATF investigations.

She also mentioned applying for retirement but feared legal challenges, opting instead for a 24-hour effective resignation to prioritize IDAC and the NPA's interests.

The controversy has raised concerns about public confidence in anti-corruption institutions, with legal experts cautioning against undermining these critical bodies.
